Introduction
We’re looking for an independent contractor or communications firm to serve as a part-time Content and Communications Manager, supporting the vision and mission of a growing new nonprofit. The Center for Christianity and Public Life is a nonpartisan institution, based in Washington, D.C. The Center’s mission is to contend for the credibility of Christian resources in public life, for the public good. We advance this mission through two parallel streams of work: Public Imagination–we explain Christianity to the public, and advance Christian resources for the good of the public; and Christian Civic Formation–we grow, resource, convene and represent the community of Christians who are convinced that spiritual formation is central to civic renewal.
The Content and Communications Manager is a part-time, contracted position that is integral to the success of the team and the overall organization. We’re looking for an experienced communications and marketing professional or firm who will spearhead a content and communications strategy and grow our reach. The ideal candidate for this role is invigorated by the vision of the organization and will effectively tell the story of CCPL, our leaders, and our programs to a growing audience. The Content and Communications Manager will collaborate with the President and Chief of Staff, but will serve as the primary lead for communications and marketing outreach for the organization.
This individual or firm has designed and carried out strategic communications and marketing plans that advance programmatic goals and growth, shape public opinion, and attract new supporters, partners, and allies. The successful candidate is someone who can bring thoughtful, imaginative ideas to any discussion, and demonstrates from the outset an ability to be both strategic and hands-on, driving results across multiple programs/initiatives. This is an independent contractor position for a six-month contract, with the potential for this to turn into a long-term position or contract.
Description of Role
As a start-up we expect some fluidity regarding this role and its duties. We anticipate the role to focus in these areas, with an emphasis on supporting two primary programmatic areas: CCPL’s Public Imagination stream and Michael Wear’s book, The Spirit of our Politics (to be released in 2024).
The Content and Communications Manager will develop and implement multi-faceted communications and marketing plans with accompanying budgets that are responsive to current needs and opportunities, both for the organization overall and for specific programs and initiatives—work to be undertaken collaboratively with program leads and other senior staff.
They will lead all public-facing communications strategy across formats, channels, and audiences with attention to maintaining cohesive quality, branding, and message. This includes social media strategy and overall digital strategy, media relations and placement, and a stakeholder communications strategy (including donation appeals).
This is a hands-on role; the manager will also execute against these strategies and produce content in collaboration with program teams and external contractors, where necessary. They will take the lead in creating content for social media, newsletters, and print communications.
Other responsibilities for this position include designing effective data collection tools; monitoring weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual data to tell the story of our organization; and collaborating with the program leads and other senior staff to determine appropriate goals and metrics.
The ideal candidate would be ready to start a contract by early November and be present at our Summit (November 6-7) to support with media and press relations.
CCPL’s Values
It is essential that our content and messaging are reflective of our Christian values and overall disposition toward politics and public life:
We believe Christian resources are for the public good, and Christian public participation ought to be oriented toward the public good. We offer what we have not as an act of imposition, but out of a spirit of loving service, as an offering.
We support and work toward healthy, inclusive civic pluralism in 21st century America.
We embrace religious freedom for people of all faiths and none. We value the contributions of non-Christian, non-religious people and organizations, and seek to “partner with all to do good, and none to do harm.”
We are committed to racial diversity and valuing the resources of diverse Christian traditions.
We especially value and support next-generation leaders, and include younger voices throughout our programming. We seek to cultivate earnest, faithful individuals who can bear the burden of leadership with integrity.
We believe politics is prudential, not dogmatic; penultimate, not ultimate; important, but not sufficient.
We see a generational opportunity for The Center for Christianity and Public Life to shift the center of gravity in our national discourse in a unique and necessary way, and we believe the Center will be uniquely positioned to do just that, meeting needs that are not currently met.
